Held every year on the 21st of May, Cultural Diversity Day highlights not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue. Bridging the gap between cultures is necessary for peace, stability, and development.
According to the UN, the day provides us with the perfect opportunity to advance the four goals of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (adopted in October 2005):
To support sustainable systems of governance for culture
To achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase the mobility of artists and cultural professionals
To integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks
To promote human rights and fundamental freedoms
So, how exactly do we embrace other cultures? It all begins by starting a dialogue between those who are different from us, allowing respect and mutual understanding to develop for unique cultures and faiths. Some ideas are:
Visit an art exhibition or museum dedicated to other cultures
Learn about another religion
Watch an international film or documentary
Listen to some music from a different culture
Play a sport related to a different culture (e.g: karate, cricket)
Cook some traditional food from a different culture
Learn about traditional celebrations from other cultures
Volunteer with an organization working for diversity and inclusion
Start to learn another language
Spread the word about Cultural Diversity Day
In conclusion, cultural diversity can result in a more fulfilling life on all accounts: from uniting global societies, to celebrating the richness of each culture, and working towards 17 different sustainable development goals to help ensure the future of all humankind.
