3 Tools for Student Self-Management

In a generation of instant gratification, shortening attention spans, and countless distractions, finding the discipline to sit down and manage your own time as a student can be difficult, to say the least. This article will introduce three self-management tools, whether you’re in secondary school, university, or even the workplace, to improve productivity and reduce time spent on-task.

1. Accountability

Holding yourself accountable for a certain amount of work is crucial. Perhaps come to an agreement with a friend studying the same subject as you, or use an app to determine when to reward yourself. Popular choices to stay off your phone are Flora, or the very similar Plantie. And when the timer goes off, some reward ideas include: a 20-minute power nap, a chapter of a new book, or a phone call with a friend. Rewarding positive behavior increases the likelihood of repeating that behaviour, furthering progress to achieve a long-term goal.

2. Time logs

Onto methodology: rather than the traditional checklist, implement a time-based system to promote goal-setting and reflection. Document how long you spend on specific tasks and assignments, potentially over the course of a week. Colour-code your tasks into personal, academic, and professional (if applicable). A useful tool for this may be Excel or Google Sheets. If kept accurately, the log may surprise you and inspire you to use your time more efficiently!

3. Variety

Keeping routines leads to better self-management in tandem with personal, academic, and professional success. However, the benefits of changing up your workspace, or experimenting with different revision methods, are undeniable. Relocating from a collaborative kitchen table to a library setting, or testing out the Protege Effect for yourself, may result in a surprisingly productive study session - and will positively impact your future self. Finding the balance between a good routine and a varied lifestyle is key to keeping things reliable, but fun and fresh!
